I am looking for a GPS tracking solution for assets with a value of about $500.?

All of the GPS tracking devices I have found are very expensive. Are there any lower cost GPS tracking devices that I could attach to my $500 assets and poll periodically to see where they are at?

1. The cheapest one that I know is a a AUD 280 Trimble TrimTrac 1.1 from www.phantomeye.com The device is SMS enabled for polling. Anything that has a GSM / GPS chipset will not be cheap. The other considerations are battery life. This one has a motion sensor enabled switching on/off and can go upto 4-9 months.
