how accurate were GPS systems in the beginning?

Hey any1 know how accurate GPS systems were in the beginning when they were first made? Best Answer will be handpicked by me!

1. They where not very accurate, but they seemed really amazing to people when they first came out. They where pretty stupid compared to what we have now!
2. I have used some made about 7-8 years ago and they were about 15-20 feet from accurate.
3. they were as accurate as they are now. the United States government put on a deliberate interference signal to prevent the general public from getting a fix closer than about 100 feet. Land Surveyors and others with need for precision could get a correction number to use after the fact of measurement. I think Clinton ordered the interference turned off.
