Do those GPS Navigational systems have a monthly fee to use them?

Hi, I've been thinking about getting one of those GPS navigational systems for my car. After the initial expense of purchasing one, is there a monthly fee or anything to operate it? How do you update the maps etc. on it?

2. Yes and No. Usually the GPS comes with a "Set" of data that is "free" but if you want updated information later on their could be a fee.
