What differentiates cheaper gps systems from the expensive ones?

Is it number of "hotspots" saved to the system? Do they play mp3s, have various voice/language types? Just curious as to what kind to get as a gift for a friend.

  1. Bells & whistles. More features, essentially. More memory for more maps if you travel across country. Larger displays. Voice directions. On-the-fly rapid recalculation if you miss your street. Subscriptions for free map updates as roads change.
  2. Number of hotspots, detail of voice (like some say street names and some don't) features like chiming before a turn, etc. Mine has all those.. I have the Garmin 660 I think it's amazing.. I bought it from amazon I couldn't believe they had it like $400 off and I got it for the same price as the lower low models ..
