How do Garmin GPS systems work?
I am considering purchasing a system (or one comparable that is less expensive) as I may be moving to the Houston area and I am unfamiliar with it. Do you buy the system and that's it? Or do you have to pay for monthly service and updates?

- You buy the system. There is no service fee. The satellites that provide the information are govt. satellites and are free to use. Map updates are an issue with many GPS systems. Many brands have map updating service, but it's difficult to keep up with road and street changes over the entire country. I'm not sure how Garmin handles it. Ask before you buy.
- The garmin system works off satellites to give you very close positioning. I have a garmin street pilot c340 which comes with pre-loaded maps of all north american cities. also provides voice for step by step direction of all turns etc naming all the streets and highways you enter. Probably can be purchased online for around $300. just type in best price garmin street pilot c340.
- The garmin system works off satellites to give you very close positioning. its a free service that is really cool./
- You buy the GPS receiver and that's all. I recommend you to take a look at the Garmin eTrex line of GPS receivers, as they are very easy to use: http://www.sport-gadgets.com/new-garmin-etrex-models/
