- I live in New York City, and yes it's happening. Take the Subway if you really don't want to walk. Manhattan Island is only 3 miles long and the rest of the city (Queens, Bronx, etc...) may be a problem. But it's really easy to walk, I'm telling you...
- Subways , buses and trains will get you pretty much anywhere . The one thing that you may need do if you want to use buses and subways from the airport is to get your luggage down to carrion + a brief case size so that you can negotiate subway staircases and turnstiles a lot easier. btw the person who first answered this question made a typo ; it should read that Manhattan is 13 miles long
- If the strike does take place, not all the cabbies will go on it. I heard on the news couple of days ago that only 15-30% of the drivers will go on the strike. Though there will be a huge demand of taxis during that strike, you will still be able to get around. After all, you are talking about NEW YORK!
- The subway is great in manahattan and the cabs don't really go to the other boroughs anyway. You will be fine unless you need to carry a bunch of stuff.
- New York City has one of the best public transportation systems in the world. Learn to use it, and you will have NO problem getting around. It gets you just about anywhere. Cabs are much more expensive anyway, and they get stuck in traffic. Who needs that?
