Are GPS Systems able to hold a charge from an ac adaptor (wall outlet)?

I just bought a '' Mio '' gps system and wanted to know if the only way for it to power up is with the car adaptor? It has a slot for a USB and I happen to have a USB cord that can be connected to a outlet thing (the thing that actually goes into the wall) [lol]

1. You can get a 12-volt-DC adapter that plugs in the wall and provides a cigarette lighter jack with 12 volts, just like a car. Then, just plug the car adapter into that and plug it into the wall.
