When it comes to GPS systems, are TomTom, Garmin, and Magellen about equal? Or is one better?

1. They are all about the same for accuracy and also have almost equal functionality. The biggest difference you will find between them is the price and user interface. If you're looking to purchase a new GPS you shouldn't worry about the brand too much and go with one that has a good price with the features you're looking for. There is however one brand that I will never buy and that is Magellan because of their complete lack of customer service. I have had experience with their total lack of customer service through their professional line of GPS devices and that is the reason I will never buy from them.
