Are external GPS units better or should I get a built-in one for my car?

I have a dilemma. I have the option to get a car with an internal GPS unit using an internal hard drive....or, I can just buy an external one and stick it on my dash/window. The concern I have with the built-in GPS is if it breaks, or the hard drive fails after a few years. Will it bet REALLY expensive to repair/replace from the dealer? So I was wondering if I should just get an external GPS unit, since I can upgrade it in the future. I also won't have to worry about future GPS repairs for my car. What do you think?

  1. Your logic is flawless, and you're correct when you say it willl be REALLY expensive. Buy an external unit. In a few years, when it breaks, you can get another one much cheaper, AND in a few years, the technological advances in GPS units will be much, much improved, so it only makes sense to buy an external one.
  2. I personally have a Mio Digiwalker with a mount for my Altima. I like having a removable gps because I can let friends and family borrow it if they need to. Plus I like the fact that it's really easy for me to sell the old one on ebay and upgrade.
  3. I use an external unit with a laptop. Check out delorme.com They have excellent maps and equipment and software...
