Can you change the navigation software on a GPS device?

i just bought a car\handheld gps navigation unit. The software on it is horrible. i was wondering is there anyway of changing the software on the unit? Are there any third party navigation software for GPS devices? It has 1Gb of storage space on the unit.

1. if you mean the layout of the buttons and the navigation of the menus then no, unless they have a firm ware update for the unit. you can download other maps for a price online.
